I Pinco Pallino for a trip to Pitigliano
One of the towns we wanted to visit the most is Pitigliano, also known as Little Jerusalem for the historical presence of a thriving Jewish population. So, just before the sunset, we headed towards the hill town, planning to have dinner there. We parked next to the centre, in a plain from which we could take in the whole town. Spectacular!
We walked through the medieval gate, next to the remnants of the 17th-century Medici aqueduct, into the old town. We stopped playing with the fountain next to the entrance of the beautiful Orsini Palace and then we got lost in the tiny ancient alleyways.
We end this post with a quote, by Carreen Conlan, that fully represents how we felt on seeing this amazing town: “My first impression of Pitigliano took my breath away. I rounded the bend in the road and beyond the lush green valley was Pitigliano… hanging on a tuff outcrop, its ancient medieval disorderly houses clinging together.”
La città che volevamo visitare in modo particolare è Pitigliano, conosciuta anche come Piccola Gerusalemme per la storica presenza di una fiorente comunità di origine ebraica. Così, poco prima del tramonto, ci siamo dirette verso la città alta, con l’obiettivo di cenare lì. Abbiamo parcheggiato accanto al centro, su una piana, da cui si può abbracciare tutta la città con lo sguardo. Spettacolare!
Siamo entrate dalla porta medievale, passando accanto ai resti dell’acquedotto mediceo del 17 secolo, verso la città vecchia. Ci siamo fermate a giocare con l’acqua della fontana di fronte all’ingresso del bellissimo Palazzo Orsini, e poi ci siamo perse nelle piccole viuzze antiche.
Vogliamo chiudere questo post con una citazione di Carreen Conlan, che rappresenta a pieno come ci siamo sentite nel vedere questa meravigliosa cittadina: “La prima volta che ho visto Pitigliano mi ha letteralmente tolto il fiato. Sono salita lungo la strada serpeggiante e al di là della verde vallata, ecco Pitigliano… abbarbicato su uno sperone di tufo, cone le sue antiche case medioevali, disordinate ed avvinghiate tra loro.”
