The colours of Christmas Red
The colours of Christmas red with Emma and Paesaggio fall winter 2016 red dress
While working on our Christmas tree and decorations a few days ago, we happened to wonder what colours were traditionally associated with Christmas and why. After discussing with the family (more on the why than on the what), we started poking around online. We were not surprised to find that red and green remain the most universally accepted colours of Christmas, with gold getting more and more popular.
We want to share with you some of our findings starting from the colours of Christmas red. An early use of red at Christmas were the apples on the paradise tree of medieval miracle plays that were performed very often on Christmas Eve. Taking inspiration from that (as uncle Fede had already told us) the farmers started to hang apples on their pines at Christmas (this is apparently also the origin of nowadays Christmas baubles).
Red is also an important symbol of Christ’s birth and death, is the colour of the Holly berries and of Bishops robes.
And red is also the dress that beautiful Emma is wearing for us on these pics taken by our talented friend Ariana. We love the contrasting effect of the metallic red with the neutral colour of the room. When we saw this dress, we loved it immediately, and when we saw it on Emma, we thought that they were the perfect match!

Qualche giorno fa, mentre stavamo preparando l’albero e le decorazioni di Natale, ci è capitato di chiederci quali fossero i colori tradizionalmente associati al Natale e perché. Dopo averne discusso in famiglia (più sul perché che sui colori), abbiamo iniziato a cercare online. Senza sorpresa, abbiamo scoperto che il rosso e il verde rimangono i colori universalmente legati al Natale, con l’oro che sta diventado sempre più popolare.
Vogliamo condividere con voi quello che abbiamo imparato, partendo dal colore rosso. L’uso del rosso a Natale è inizialmente da ricondurre alle mele sull’albero del paradiso, in scena nei giochi medievali che si svolgevano molto spesso alla vigilia di Natale. Prendendo inspirazione da queste (come lo zio Fede ci aveva già detto) i contadini iniziarono ad appendere le mele sui loro pini a Natale (e questa sembre essere anche l’origine delle palle come decorazione natalizia).
Il rosso è anche un importante simbolo della nascita e della morte di Cristo, è il colore delle bacche di agrifoglio e delle vesti cardinalizie.
E rosso è anche il vestito che la splendida Emma indossa per noi in queste foto scattate dalla nostra bravissima amica Ariana. Adoriamo l’effetto di contrasto del rosso metallizzato con il colore neutro della stanza. Quando abbiamo visto questo vestito, ce ne siamo subito innamorate, e quando lo abbiamo visto indosso ad Emma, beh, abbiamo pensato fossero la coppia perfetta!
Vi aspettiamo con il prossimo colore di Natale: verde, e con un’altra ospite speciale … presto sul nostro blog di moda bimbi.
