Autumn in Bergamo: visiting the upper city with Elsy girl fall winter 2017
A couple of weekends ago, we went for an out-of-town excursion to Bergamo. It was a beautiful sunny day, and although rather chilly, we enjoyed strolling around. We parked our car in the lower city and took the old funicular to the upper city. If you want to visit “città alta”, keep in mind that during the weekend you can’t access it by car.
The upper city is the historic core built up on the hills and it is surrounded by Venetian walls build in the 16th century. Once there we headed to “Piazza Vecchia” (“Old Square” in English), the heart of the upper city and the most popular place for Bergamo’s citizens to spend some time with friends. Just behind it is “Piazza Duomo”, with the impressive cathedral situated opposite the majestic baptistery, the bishop’s palace and the Curia.
We had a quick lunch in one of the lovely restaurants facing Piazza Vecchia and then we headed to the stunning San Giacomo gate, the main access to the upper city, one of the four gates that open along the perimeter of the ancient Venetian Walls. The view from there is simply terrific!
Unfortunately, this time we could spend only four hours there, but we are planning to go back to Bergamo to see all the beautiful things that we could not see this time.

Un paio di fine settimana fa, abbiamo organizzato una gita fuori porta a Bergamo. Era una splendida giornata di sole, e anche se faceva piuttosto fredda, è stato molto piacevole passeggiare per la città. Abbiamo parcheggiato l’auto in Bergamo bassa e abbiamo preso la vecchia funicolare in direzione della città alta. Se volete visitare la “città alta” tenete a presente che durante il fine settimana l’accesso è vietato alle macchine.
Bergamo alta è il nucleo storico della città edificato sulle colline e circondato dalle mura veneziane risalenti al 16 ° secolo. Una volta lì, ci siamo dirette verso Piazza Vecchia, il cuore della città alta e il luogo preferito dai bergamaschi per trascorrere un po’di tempo con gli amici. Proprio dietro Piazza Vecchia si può ammirare Piazza Duomo, con l’imponente cattedrale situata di fronte al maestoso battistero, il palazzo vescovile e la Curia.
Abbiamo pranzato velocemente in uno dei deliziosi ristoranti che si affacciano su Piazza Vecchia e poi ci siamo diretti verso la splendida porta di San Giacomo, l’accesso principale alla città alta e una delle quattro porte che si aprono lungo il perimetro delle antiche mura veneziane. Da lì si gode una vista mozzafiato!
Sfortunatamente, questa volta siamo potuti rimanere solo per quattro ore, ma stiamo già programmando di tornare a Bergamo per vedere tutto quanto non siamo riusciti questa volta.
