Magil stars for winter 2017 during Saint Lucy’s day
For those like mom, who grew up in North-Eastern Italy, precisely in the regions of Trentino, Friuli, East Lombardy and parts of Veneto, today is a very big day. The 13th of December is Saint Lucy’s day, the patron saint of the eyes and of the ophthalmologists, invoked for all the diseases related to sight. In these regions, it is said that it’s her, not Santa, that brings gifts to good children and coal to bad ones.
According to tradition, on the night between 12 and 13 December, the Saint arrives riding a donkey, in the company of her escort, Castaldo. Children are asked to leave a cup of coffee with some biscuits for Saint Lucy, a carrot for the donkey and a piece of bread for Castaldo. We don’t celebrate it in Milan, but mom remembers this day with joy, affection and a bit of nostalgia.
This year Saint Lucy’s day will be special for another reason: it will be the most spectacular night of the year with a rain of shooting stars! The géminides, a meteor shower that occurs every year in the month of December, should reach their climax tonight.

Per chi, come la mamma, è cresciuto nel nord-est Italia, più precisamente nelle regioni del Trentino, Friuli, Lombardia orientale e Veneto, oggi è un giorno veramente speciale. Il 13 dicembre è il giorno di Santa Lucia, la santa protettrice degli occhi e degli oculisti, invocata in generale per tutte le malattie legate alla vista. In queste regioni, si dice che sia lei, e non Babbo Natale, a portare doni e dolciumi ai bambini buoni e il carbone a quelli cattivi.
Secondo la tradizione, nella notte tra il 12 e il 13 dicembre, la santa arriva in groppa al suo asinello seguita dal cocchiere, Castaldo. Ai bambini viene chiesto di lasciare in cambio dei doni una tazza di caffé con dei biscotti per Santa Lucia, una carota per l’asinello e un pezzo di pane per Castaldo. Noi non la festeggiamo a Milano, ma la mamma ricorda questo giorno con tanta gioia, affetto e un po’ di nostalgia.
Quest’anno il giorno di Santa Lucia sarà speciale anche per un’altra ragione: sarà la notte più spettacolare dell’anno con una meravigliosa pioggia di stelle cadenti! Le Geminidi, uno sciame di meteoriti tra le più belle e luminose che si presenta ogni anno nel mese di dicembre, dovrebbero raggiungere il suo culmine proprio questa sera.
Ci è sembrato perfetto per il tema che stiamo trattando sul blog: le stelle! Noi celebriamo l’evento con le stelle di Magil per l’inverno 2017 – Magil stars for winter 2017. Ci siamo innamorate di questo abitino grigio caratterizzato da una pioggia di stelle argentate sull’ampia gonna di tulle!
