Guggenheim New York With Kids

We spent the last week of our summer stay in the United States (see also here) in New York where, among other things we will soon show you (if you are curious, you can look at our IG highlights), we went to see the Solomon R. Guggenheim museum. We talked a lot before making this decision because, although the girls are used to going to museums, the Guggenheim seemed like a super serious art one and we thought they would have ended up bored right away.
We were wrong! And in fact, we stayed there 4 hours, lunch included, and we had a really good time.
While dad was waiting on the ticket buyer’s line (which by the way was very short) Guggenheim staff greeted Anna and Alice and handed each a tote bag full of sketch pads, coloured pencils and activity booklets. Among these, there was one that encouraged them to find “hidden” geometric shapes around the museum. This was the funniest part! We took it as a kind of treasure hunt and we went around trying to spot the geometrical forms first and marking them down on the activity page – in the photos below you can see some of the ones we found.
Although it is suggested to take the elevator to the top and work your way down, we decided to walk up and down to see the same things twice, from different angles. We ended up very happy with this decision because we could spot shapes on the way down that we did not in the way up!
A final note: Guggenheim is one of the cheapest museum we’ve ever been. Kids under 12 are free all time which offsets the $25 per adult admission.

Abbiamo trascorso l’ultima settimana del nostro soggiorno estivo negli Stati Uniti (vedi anche qui) a New York, dove, tra le altre cose che vi mostreremo presto (se siete curiosi potete dare un’occhiata agli highlight di Instagram), siamo andate a vedere il museo Solomon R. Guggenheim. Abbiamo discusso molto prima di prendere questa decisione perché, sebbene le bimbe siano abituate ad andare in giro per musei, il Guggenheim ci sembrava proprio un museo di arte super serio e pensavamo che si sarebbero annoiate subito.
Ci sbagliavamo! Ed infatti siamo rimasti lì ben 4 ore, pranzo incluso, e ci siamo divertiti un sacco.
Mentre il papà aspettava in fila per fare il biglietto (la coda per altro è stata piuttosto breve), lo staff del Guggenheim ha dato il benvenuto ad Anna e Alice e ha consegnato loro una borsa con un blocco per disegnare, delle matite colorate e vari libretti per fare delle attività. Tra questi, ce n’era uno che le incoraggiava a trovare le forme geometriche “nascoste” nell’architettura del museo. Questa è stata la parte più divertente della giornata! L’abbiamo presa come una specie di caccia al tesoro e siamo andate in giro facendo a gara a chi trovava per prima le forme geometriche e le segnava sul libro delle attività – nelle foto qui sotto potete vedere alcune di quelle che abbiamo trovato.
Sebbene venga suggerito di prendere l’ascensore fino in cima e poi scendere, noi abbiamo deciso di salire e scendere a piedi per vedere le stesse cose due volte, da diverse angolazioni. Dobbiamo dire che siamo state molto contente di questa decisione, perché in questo modo siamo riuscite a trovare delle forme geometriche che ci erano sfuggite durante la salita!
Una nota conclusiva: il Guggenheim è uno dei musei più economici che abbiamo visitato e lo consigliamo anche per questa ragione. I bambini sotto i 12 anni non pagano mai e questo più che compensa i $25 del prezzo per l’ammissione degli adulti.

Guggenheim New York With Kids – Space, form and scale

Space, form, and scale! These are the elements of the Guggenheim that strike visitors, us included, when they first enter the museum’s spiral rotunda.

Alice got attracted by this massive aerial photograph of Chase Manhattan’s two-and-a-half-acre plaza, taken in the 1960s.

We like these photos because she seems just walking in that space rather than in the Guggenheim’s High Gallery.

Spazio, forme e dimensioni! Questi gli elementi del Guggenheim che colpiscono i visitatori, noi inclusi, quando entrano per la prima volta nella rotonda a spirale del museo.

Alice, in particolare, è stata attratta da questa enorme fotografia aerea della piazza di Chase Manhattan, scattata negli anni ’60.

Ci piacciono un sacco queste immagini perché sembra che lei stia camminando in quello spazio piuttosto che nel museo!

Guggenheim New York With Kids – Lunch at The Wright

We had our lunch break at The Wright, the museum’s fine-dining restaurant, where we continued our treasure hunt. We found semicirles and other forms in the stunning glass window characterising the space.

Abbiamo pranzato a The Wright, il raffinato ristorante del museo, dove abbiamo continuato la nostra caccia al tesoro. Abbiamo trovato semicerchi e altre forme nella splendida vetrata che caratterizza lo spazio.
