The apple harvest in Sarabanda fall winter 2019
When we posted the first picture related to this post on our Instagram account a couple of days ago, we did not expect to receive so many questions and comments about the apple harvest.
For us, apple picking is a long standing fall tradition, one that we all look forward to each year like the grape harvest in Franciacorta (see also here) or the chestnut harvest in the woods. This could be due to our proximity to Valtellina, one of the largest Italian apple production area, or more simply due to the fact our grandparents have apple trees.
Every year, during the second weekend of October, the extended family meets in grandpa’s small orchard – this is our father’s father place, because our mother’s father has only a few trees. Early in the morning we start the apple harvest. We collect the apples and put them in big baskets, sorted by type, which are then stored in a cool place at grandfather’s house . This activity lasts a few hours, till lunchtime, when we gather to eat all together and end the day playing and chatting.
Picking apples is not complicated and can also be done by kids. It requires only a bit of care in detaching the fruit from the branches and in the storing of the fruit inside the containers. This year too, the girls loved it and we could take to Milan some of our labour, which we used this weekend to make a fragrant apple pie all together!

La raccolta delle mele in Sarabanda autunno inverno 2019
Quando un paio di giorni fa abbiamo pubblicato sul nostro account Instagram la prima foto relativa a questo post, non ci aspettavamo di ricevere così tante domande e commenti sulla raccolta delle mele.
Per noi la raccolta delle mele è una tradizione autunnale di lunga data, che attendiamo con gioia ogni anno, alla stregua della vendemmia in Franciacorta (date un’occhiata anche qui) o ancora della raccolta delle castagne tra i boschi. Questo potrebbe essere dovuto alla nostra vicinanza con la Valtellina, una delle maggiori aree italiane di produzione delle mele, oppure più semplicemente per il fatto che entrambi i nostri nonni hanno degli alberi di mele.
Ogni anno, durante il secondo fine settimana di ottobre, la famiglia allargata si incontra nel piccolo frutteto del nonno – il papà del papà perché il papà della mamma ha solo pochi alberi. Al mattino presto iniziamo la raccolta delle mele e le riponiamo in grandi ceste, ordinate in base al tipo che vengono poi conservate in un luogo fresco a casa del nonno. Quest’attività dura qualche ora, fino all’ora di pranzo, quando ci riuniamo a mangiare tutti insieme e terminiamo la giornata tra giochi e chiacchierate.
Raccogliere le mele non è complicato e può essere fatto anche dai bambini. Richiede solo un po ‘di attenzione quando si stacca il frutto dal ramo e quando lo si depone nei contenitori. Anche quest’anno alle bimbe è piaciuto molto e abbiamo potuto portare a Milano parte del nostro raccolto che abbiamo usato questo fine settimana per fare una profumatissima torta di mele tutti insieme!
