Visiting museums with kids: four tips to make it easier
Mom loves art and history. So, quite often, we organise a visit to a museum or to a cultural centre. They are a great way to explore art, history and science in an educationally engaging environment.
Considering that Anna is 7 and Alice is only 4, art museums are still slightly tricky, but they do enjoy natural and historical museums. They loved the Egyptian Museum in Turin, and the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. But their favourite so far is the museum of natural history located in the Indro Montanelli public gardens.
We though to share with you four tips for visiting museums with kids that work for us and that we think might be relevant for everyone.
- Engage with your kids before, during and after the visit. We usually take time to discuss the artefacts, art and content with the girls. We read the titles together and simplify them, we look at colours and shapes and try to find the connection between one piece and another, or to link what we see with something we’ve done together.
- Be among the firsts to enter. We plan to enter the place as a first thing in the morning, so to avoid long queues which are usually extremely annoying for kids… and for adults too. In addition, this allow us to see what we want in a less crowded environment and we can better adjust to the girls’ rhythms.
- Limit the length of your stay. Unless the girls specifically ask to stay longer, we do not stay in the place more than a couple of hours not to get them too tired and bored. Then, go to an attraction or do an activity outdoor in the area. We always have a such as a picnic in the Indro Montanelli park after our visits to the museum.
- Go with other kids. The girls get more excited and enjoy the visit more if they are with other kids, so they can discuss among them what they see. This was absolutely evident during our visit to the Museo del Novecento (see also here) where we combined a great shooting session with an unforgettable visit to one of the best Museum in Milan. Anna, Chiara, Emma and Greta where absolutely thrilled during the visit.

La mamma ama l’arte e la storia. Così, appena riesce, organizza una visita ad un museo o ad un centro culturale. Sono il modo migliore per avvicinarsi all’arte, alla storia e alla scienza, in un contesto educativo coinvolgente.
Considerando che Anna ha 7 anni ed Alice solo 4, i musei d’arte sono ancora un po’ complicati, mentre riescono già ad apprezzare i musei di storia naturale e di storia in generale. Si sono divertite particolarmente al Museo Egizio di Torino e al Museo Nazionale di Storia Naturale di Parigi. Anche se il loro preferito in assoluto rimane finora il Museo di Storia Naturale dei giardini pubblici Indro Montanelli.
Abbiamo pensato di condividere quattro suggerimenti per visitare i musei con i bambini, che abbiamo visto funzionare bene per noi e che crediamo possano essere utili a tutti
- Coinvolgete i vostri bimbi, prima, durante e dopo la visita. Noi di solito ci prendiamo un po’ di tempo per parlare con le bimbe di quello che vedremo durante la visita. Al museo leggiamo insieme i titoli e cerchiamo di rendere i contenuti più comprensibili per loro, guardiamo i colori e le forme, cerchiamo di trovare un legame tra i vari elementi, e di collegare ciò che vediamo con qualcosa che abbiamo fatto insieme.
- Cercate di essere tra i primi ad entrare. Ci organizziamo per entrare al museo di prima mattina, in modo da evitare le lunghe code che, bisogna ammetterlo, sono estremamente noiose per i piccoli, ma anche per i grandi. Questo ci permette inoltre, di vedere ciò che vogliamo in un contesto meno affollato e possiamo adattarci con calma ai tempi delle bimbe.
- Limitate la permanenza al museo. A meno che Anna ed Alice non chiedano espressamente di rimanere più a lungo, non ci tratteniamo nel museo per più di un paio di ore, per non farle stancare troppo o annoiarle. Poi, andiamo ad un parco o ci dedichiamo ad un’attività all’aria aperta.
- Andate con altri bambini. Le bimbe sono più felici e si godono maggiormente queste visite se andiamo con altri bambini che conoscono, perché possono discutere tra di loro ciò che vedono. Questo è stato estremamente evidente durante la nostra visita al Museo del Novecento (vedi anche qui), dove abbiamo abbinato una sessione fotografica con la visita ad uno dei musei più belli di Milano. Anna, Chiara, Emma e Greta erano entusiaste durante la visita.
